Social Security Numbers
January 12, 2026
Never publish, display, or collect full or partial Social Security Numbers (SSN or last four digits) on any public UAMS website, form, PDF, or page.
Social Security Numbers (full or truncated) are highly sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Posting or collecting them publicly violates federal privacy laws, UAMS policy, and exposes individuals to identity theft.
Even redacted, masked, or “hidden” SSNs are prohibited in public content.
If You Need to Collect SSNs
Use only secure, authenticated systems (e.g., Workday, MyChart, approved encrypted forms).
Additional Risks
- Public websites are indexed by search engines — accidental exposure is permanent
- Visible or poorly redacted SSNs create accessibility barriers (confuses screen readers)
Immediate removal is required if SSNs are discovered on any site.
