Adding Alternative Text (Alt Text) to Images

  • Adding Alternative Text (Alt Text) to Images

All images must have appropriate alternative text so screen-reader users understand their content and purpose (WCAG 1.1.1).

  • In the UAMS CMS, add alt text in the “Alt text” field in the Media Library or directly in the image block settings.
  • Be concise but descriptive: convey the same information a sighted user gets.
  • Never use images of text (including Creative Services flyers turned into screenshots).

Complex images (infographics, charts, org charts, maps) require a full text explanation on the page using headings, lists, and paragraphs in addition to alt text.
